The Local Patron chart is part of our recreational navigation courses. In this course, you will have access to all the knowledge necessary to navigate safely, with the title and certificate of Local Patron and in accordance with national navigation rules.

Pre-registration for the Local Patron letter can be done through our website, in person at our recreational navigation school, or also by telephone or email, only becoming definitive upon payment of the down payment. The remaining course payment will be settled at the beginning and during the course.

The Local Patron letter entitles its holder to the management of pleasure craft:

  • No installed power limit;

  • Day or night navigation in sight of the coast;

  • Maximum distance of 6 miles from the coast and 25 miles from a port of call;

 

Course details:

  • Local Patron charter courses are held with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 students;

  • Duration of 40 hours (30 hours of theory and 10 hours of practice);

  • Theoretical training: 10 classes during the week from 7 pm to 11 pm;

  • Practical training: Saturday, Sunday or Holiday morning or afternoon;

  • Exam: Saturday, Sunday or Holiday at 09:00 according to DGRM confirmation (ex-IPTM);

  • Use of material included;

  • Examination and letter issuance fees included;

Inclusion criteria :

  • Knowing how to read and write;

  • Be 18 years of age or older;

  • Minimum educational qualifications for the age.

 

Required documentation:

  • To start the Local Patron course:

  • Application form;

  • Copy of identification document;

  • Copy of Tax Identification Number;

  • Previous letter (if applicable);

  • A photography.

 

Before taking the exam:

  • Copy of the academic qualification certificate;

  • Medical certificate for water sports;

  • Certificate of aptitude for swimming and rowing.

Theory:

  • Recapitulation of the subjects of the Sailor course;

  • Applicable legislation;

  • Shape and dimensions of the Earth. Earth sphere. Earth sphere lines and points. Greenwich Mean Time. Ecuador. Arc measurements. Latitude and longitude. Mile point. Cardinal points. The direction at sea. Head and bearing. Abatement. Knot concept. Measurement of distances and speeds;

  • Generalities about maritime navigation charts. Mercator's chart. Distance measurement. Chart scales. Classification of cards. Defeats. Loxodromic defeat and its tracing on the Mercator chart. Position lines. Leading, alignment, azimuth, distance, bathymetric;

  • Odometers. Verification of its operation;

  • Earth magnetism. Declination. Detour. Its causes and consequences. Hand and government needles. Deviation table. Verification of the correct functioning of a needle;

  • Lighthouses and beaconing;

  • Estimated navigation, coastal and in restricted waters. Effects of currents. Degree of confidence in the position. Importance of visual navigation. Navigation errors;

  • Tides, currents and winds. Using the tide table. Probe calculation per hour;

  • General information about radar and its use in navigation and to avoid collisions; GPS generalities. Use of GPS. Errors and notion of Datum. Electronic letters. Its use; Generalities about probes. Its use and verification of its correct functioning;

  • Navigation and maneuver rules of the international regulation to avoid collisions at sea;

  • Knowledge of the subjects included in the examination program for obtaining the certificate of radiotelephone operator SISTEMA GMDSS;

  • General knowledge of meteorology. Weather information on board:

  • Anchoring, mooring and leaving a pier, a buoy or other vessel;

  • Safety on board and accident prevention. Rescue means and equipment. Ship abandonment. Basic notions of first aid;

  • Engine generalities. Use and maintenance by the user. More frequent breakdowns.

Practice:

  • Command and steering of a sailing or power vessel, including:

    • Driving estimated navigation, coastal and in restricted waters; Man overboard and towing manoeuvres; Practical application exercises of theoretical knowledge about navigation and safety; Correct use of communications equipment; Correct use of navigation equipment. Verification of the accuracy of the elements provided by the equipment;

  • Execution of elementary works of sailor's art, chosen from among those with current practical application.
